Under Armour to make microfibre test method available to the market

Sports group Under Armour is to make its new test method for controlling the shedding of microfibres available for the wider market to use.

It announced a breakthrough in testing for microfibre shedding earlier this year, saying the test method it had developed was the result of years of research.

It has now teamed up with testing solutions supplier James Heal to make kits for the test available for purchase. The partners have had extensive support from Germany-based testing service provider Hohenstein in taking this forward.

Because fabrics shed fibres at varying rates, Under Armour said it wanted to make it easier for industry players to understand their own contributions to the microfibre issue.

“Until now, integrating fibre-shed testing into industry research and development activities has required significant time and cost,” said Under Armour’s senior vice-president for innovation, Kyle Blakely. “We believe intervening early to mitigate shedding is critical, which is why our test method is designed to address the time and cost barriers to entry. As we address our own environmental impact, we are excited to make our innovative test method widely available.”
