Successful conclusion for expanded Performance Days

Performance Days fabric fair has closed in Munich, with observers commenting on the wealth of innovation on show.

WSA’s technical editor Sophie Bramel joined the Expert Talks programme, hosting a panel on ‘The ocean plastics alternative’ (see WSA 2024 Issue 1).

She was joined by David Bayliss from Advansa, David Kwon from Hyosung and François Devy from the Seaqual Initiative.

David Kwon introduced Hyosung’s innovations with its 100% post-consumer recycled regen Ocean Nylon made from discarded fishing nets. Third party LCA data shows that the manufacture of 1 kg regen ocean post-consumer recycled nylon made with discarded fishing nets reduces CO2 emissions by 73%, fossil resource use by 76%, and water consumption by 98% compared to the manufacture of 1 kg of conventional nylon. It has also expanded its offering of regen Bio-Based Elastane, replacing nearly all the fibre’s raw materials previously made with petroleum-based resources with 100% renewable resources.

Membrane manufacturer Sympatex hosted booths in both the clothing and footwear sections. For clothing, it unveiled three new products: a plain weave, a dobby and a twill, sourced from E.dye. E.dye is a solution dyed polyester colour system that consumes up to 60% less water, uses up to 90% less chemicals and produces fewer CO2 emissions, it said. Kim Scholze, CSO Sympatex, said: “Because E.dye actually puts the colour inside the yarn, adding the new products to our portfolio gives us three major advantages. Saving water, producing less CO2, using less chemicals. Moreover, since the pigment becomes an inherent component of the yarn (in contrast to traditional processes where the yarn is produced and then coloured), solution dyeing yields fibres with exceptional colour fastness.”

We will report more from the show over the coming days.
