Novel waterless dyeing solution for cellulosics
Lenzing has teamed up with Exponent Envirotech, a cleantech start-up based in Shanghai and Foshan, to introduce a waterless dyeing technology for manmade cellulosic fibres (MMCFs), which can also be used to tint cotton and linen yarns.

Exponent’s patented Ecohues process is based on a non-aqueous solvent that is used as the dyeing medium for reactive dyes. The solvent is 99.8% reusable, the company says, does not require salts, and nearly removes the need for soap washing after dyeing. It can thus lead to savings in water, energy and time, as processing duration is 6 to 8 hours, and colour fixation rate is 97%.

With manufacturing partner Cobalt Fashion, based in Hong Kong, the Ecohues process has been used to dye Tencel branded lyocell and modal fibres and Ecovero-branded viscose, which the Austrian group points out, are all certified EU Ecolabel.
