Novel fully bio-based laminate to launch at Performance Days

06/10/2026

The result of a collaborative effort, Brightplus, Leaf Bio and NovaPoly will be presenting a new fully plant-based performance fabric at Performance Days next week. A Finnish company specialising in biobased materials, Brightplus is the maker of a bio-based film. Leaf Bio, of China, develops an advanced plant-based PEF and FDCA chemistry. NovaPoly is a brand platform covering biobased PEF, T2T rPET and Biosphere, a biodegradable additive for plastics and textiles. The brand is owned by NBC, a company based in the United Arab Emirates. NovaPoly was exclusively used by Hugo Boss for a year.

All three companies will be exhibiting at Performance Days (October 13 & 14, in Munich).

The new material being introduced combines NovaPolyPEF, a 100% bio-based PEF (polyethylene furanoate) textile, with Brightplus’ bio-based film BrightBio. Compared to traditional laminates, BrightBio is said to bond to PEF-based fabrics without needing a layer of adhesive. This, the company said, simplifies the construction by bringing conventional three-layer structures down to two functional components.

BrightBio is derived from renewable raw materials, such as non-edible biomass side streams and captured CO2. The technology is described as a drop-in solution compatible with existing textile production processes.

The BioFleax PEF fibre, made by Leaf Bio, is a furan-based polymer produced at a kilotonne scale, the company said. With its other innovative plant-based chemistry, FDCA, they are said to be sustainable alternatives to conventional PET and PTA. All three of these platforms are made from recycled feedstock and have been awarded GRS certification.
