Adidas pips Nike with first knitted football boot

Adidas has launched the Samba Primeknit – the world’s first knitted football boot and which reportedly retains the strength of a conventional boot.

The German company has been up against US rival Nike in the knitted shoe stakes – both companies launching their innovative footwear (Nike’s Flyknit and Adidas’ Primeknit) within a few weeks of each other in summer 2012. The pair ended up in court with Nike accusing adidas of infringement.

However, while Nike has launched a number of iterations and has stated it will use the technique to reduce its reliance on labour as wages rise in the East, it has not launched a football boot – enabling adidas to get there first.

Each yarn receives a high-precision coating that provides water resistance and the limited-edition boots will be available from March 17.

Adidas said it is at the “start of a revolution in adidas football footwear”. Markus Baumann, senior vice-president for football at adidas, said: "Primeknit is a further demonstration of our commitment to driving relentless innovation in football and is designed to allow for a bespoke fit for each player, making performance more intuitive and responsive than ever before.”
