Swiss outdoor brand has created an updated range of products that can help skiiers in the face of an avalanche, including airbags, backpacks and shovels.

“The first day after a precipitation period promises the best conditions for deep-snow fans in winter: the sun is high in the sky; new snow is glittering on the mountain,” said the company, “but those days have the highest potential for avalanche accidents.”

The Alyeska Protection Airbag Vest offers freedom of movement from the outside but inside is a complete avalanche airbag system with Mammut Protection Airbag Technology. The airbag enlarges the body volume of the wearer when tripped, it is able to prevent burying and protects the head, neck and chest.

The compartment in the back area holds a volume of four litres – just enough for a shovel and probe. The avalanche beacon is worn close to the body under the outer-most layers of clothing.
The airbag can also be removed from the backpack so that it can be used in all seasons.

Seven backpacks from the Mammut product series are designed with a removable airbag system.
Mammut’s avalanche beacon, Pulse Barryvox, directs rescuers to the buried person using arrows and signal information from the buried person. With the Carbon Probe 240 Fast Lock probing rod, a buried person can be located precisely. Rescuers can then use the Mammut Alugator Twist shovel for digging.

“Independent of how good or bad the conditions are: appropriate behaviour to reduce risk – including reading the avalanche bulletin and the weather report and choosing a route carefully,” added the company.
