New trade union for Yue Yuen

Press in Taiwan have reported that a new workers’ union for footwear giant Yue Yuen has been established, following strikes over labour conditions in April.

Nanfang Daily said the new federation consists of eight committees, 17 factories and 186 workshop groups. About 27,000 Yue Yuen workers, nearly 70% of its workforce, have reportedly joined.

Chen Han, chairman of the trade union federation of Yue Yuen in Gaobu, said: "We should build a platform for communication and subdivide the disputes. Only when we have harmonious labour relations can we have sustained operation of the company and realise a win-win."

The group is the world’s largest athletic footwear manufacturer, making for brands including Nike and Adidas.
