The benefits of 3D printing and rapid prototyping were top of the agenda at the first Milan-based Footwear Technology Forum organised by software developer Delcam Crispin.

Software developer Autodesk spoke about its new rendering capabilities describing how the work it has completed for car manufacturer Volkswagen could be applied to footwear design.

Danish company Ortopaedi Skomageriet discussed coupling footwear design technology with custom orthotic insoles, Lectra described how technology can help overcome manufacturing barriers, while Crocs gave an overview of its use of rapid prototyping.

Brands including Reebok, Vans and Decathlon took part, with Pentland’s 3D product designer Ed Batchelor describing the event as “well organised and enjoyable”.

Delcam says it will organise a follow-up in 2015.
