Sustainable development award for Vaude’s Second Use programme

08/03/2016
German outdoor brand Vaude has been honoured by the German Council for Sustainable Development for a programme called Second Use.

Working with online auction site eBay, Vaude set up Second Use to offer formal support for “the private resale” of used products to prolong their lifespan.

It takes the form of an eBay shop, a site within the main eBay site, offering visitors Vaude products only. When an eBay user uploads a used Vaude product, it is automatically sorted into the Vaude Second Use store. The outdoor brand does not earn anything for the sale of the product on the site, which it calls a “re-commerce” platform.

Vaude’s head of corporate social responsibility, Jan Lorch, has described Second Use as a way of “counteracting our throwaway mentality”.
