Nike to continue Sharapova sponsorship despite ban

Sportswear manufacturer Nike says it will continue to sponsor Maria Sharapova after the Russian tennis player was banned for two years for failing a drugs test.

Sharapova’s endorsement deal with the company was suspended in March after she confirmed that she had tested positive for meldonium, a substance on the banned list of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Her two-year suspension was confirmed by the ITF on June 8, although Ms Sharapova said that she plans to appeal the severity of the punishment.

"Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her,” Nike said following the ruling.

Tennis racket manufacturer Head also said it would stand by the Russian athlete, claiming that the ITF made its decision based on a “flawed process”.
