Responsible Wool Standard released

22/06/2016
Non-profit organisation Textile Exchange has released the final draft of the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which is intended to set a benchmark for animal welfare and land management practices in sheep farming. Following two public stakeholder review periods in early 2016, the final standard is now available.

The RWS is the result of a collaboration between the Textile Exchange and retailer H&M. In February 2014 they founded the International Working Group (IWG), which includes farmers, animal welfare groups, land conservation experts, supply chain members and retail brands.

The certification ensures that sheep are treated with respect to their five freedoms (lifestyle, nutrition, environment, handling and health) and that best practices are observed with regards to management and protection of the land. Wool from certified farms must also be properly identified and tracker. The standard also aims to build communication and understanding between farmers, consumers and brands.
