Greenpeace blames ZDHC for clothing companies’ slow progress

05/07/2016
Campaign group Greenpeace has praised apparel brands Inditex, H&M and Benetton for their progress towards eliminating hazardous chemicals from their supply chains, but has criticised Nike, Li-Ning and a number of other companies for “failing to take the necessary steps towards that goal”.

It made the announcement after assessing 19 apparel companies in all.

A third group of companies that came between the above two groups in Greenpeace’s assessment included adidas and Puma. It said these companies are making progress but are going more slowly than the campaign group would like.

It said the companies in this group are not banning enough hazardous chemicals and it said the main reason is that the clothing companies are relying on what Greenpeace called “the flawed chemical list from the industry group Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC)”. It said the ZDHC list is inadequate because it does not include perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) or dimethylformamide (DMF).

Amsterdam-based ZDHC is preparing a response to this criticism.
