Cellulosic fibre producer Lenzing has announced plans to build a new Tencel production unit in the US. The new factory will have the capacity to produce 90,000 tonnes of Tencel fibre per year and will be built at Lenzing’s existing site near Mobile, Alabama.

Lenzing has said it will invest almost $300 million in the project and that the new plant will be the biggest Tencel production plant in the world. It expects the facility to come on stream in the first quarter of 2019.

Chief executive, Stefan Doboczky, said on making the announcement that the new project will take Lenzing closer to meeting a target it has set itself of achieving 50% of its revenue from specialty fibres by 2020. “This expansion also underscores our commitment to all our Tencel customers,” he added, “who continue to make their products even more sustainable using Tencel, the world’s most sustainable botanic fibre.”
