Black Diamond unflustered by sales dip

Skiing, climbing and mountain sports equipment provider Black Diamond has blamed “unseasonably dry European winter conditions” for a dip in sales during the fourth quarter of 2016.

Total sales for the period were $41.4 million, down 6% year-on-year. Despite this dip, the company said it saw continuing strong demand for its climbing and mountain products. It added that its sales were affected by a “measured approach” to scaling back its apparel line.

In 2016, Black Diamond’s sales totalled $148.2 million, 5% lower than the previous year. It clarified that sales for the year were “essentially unchanged” when the impact of exchange rates is factored in.

“After more than a year of restructuring, we believe we are poised to scale the brand in 2017 through the implementation of a clear growth plan,” said John Walbrecht, president of Black Diamond.
