Cotton needs “performance enhancements” to be more competitive

The senior vice president of consumer marketing for Cotton Incorporated, Kim Kitchings, has said there are “a lot of reasons to be optimistic” for those involved in the cotton industry.

Addressing the 60th annual meeting Plain Cotton Growers in Texas, US, she explained that there had been a “significant market improvement” and that cotton prices are stabilising, making it more competitive. She added that demand from the textile industry is increasing and that consumers “still love cotton”.

There was a note of caution, however; she said the cotton industry and Cotton Incorporated both have work to do to make an impact on synthetic markets. She revealed that the organisation is examining how to modify seeds to improve fibre length as this would allow cotton to better compete with synthetics.

There is also a need for “performance enhancements” if cotton is to be more competitive, she said. These include improved moisture wicking, water repellent capabilities and thermal regulation. It is also necessary to develop more ‘smart fabrics’, she added.
