Ternua’s award-winning pants use material from recycled fishing nets

One of the first products released as part of Basque outdoor brand Ternua’s Redcycle project has been presented with an OutDoor Industry Award at the OutDoor exhibition in Friedrichshafen, Germany (June 18-21).

The brand’s Ride on Pant, which is made from yarn created using disused fishing nets, was among the Gold Award winners at the annual awards ceremony.

Ternua launched the Redcycle initiative in 2015 alongside the Gipuzkoa Inshore Fishing Producers Organization (OPEGUI). It sees disused fishing nets being collection from fishermen’s associations in several Basque towns. The nets are transformed into usable material by Italian yarn manufacturer Aquafil, which uses it to create its Econyl yarn.

In 2016, 12 tonnes of abandoned nets were collected, which Ternua used to manufacture the Ride On pant, as well as the Upright pant. Both products will be available to purchase in October.
