REI urges people to stand up for public lands

Outdoor clothing and equipment co-operative REI has called for the public to respond to a request from the US Department of the Interior for feedback on its review of national monuments.

“Our country’s public lands define who we are,” REI said. “These are the places where we work, where we play and where we connect to our shared history. Now is the time to stand up for these places—places that help us live a life outdoors.”

The US department of the Interior is currently reviewing the status of 27 US national monuments, including the San Gabriel Mountains in California, Craters of the Moon in Idaho, and Bears Ears in Utah.

REI is making it easier for people to have their say by including a space on their website for them to leave their comments to the Department of the Interior. It has urged people to use their own words, mention specific monuments by name, and explain their personal connection to the monument.

The public call for comments ends on July 10.
