REI expands online gear resale platform

A pilot of this platform was launched at the end of 2017. The new version features new brands and more product categories available for purchase, and a series of member-to-member gear swaps. REI will also have a team of employees dedicated to getting lightly used products to customers.
“At REI, we believe a life outdoors is a life well-lived, but we know that the cost of brand-new gear can be a barrier to access,” says Peter Whitcomb, REI’s director of strategy and leader of the company’s used gear efforts. “We launched Used Gear Beta online last year with the belief that we could help get more people outside by finding new homes for pre-loved gear and apparel.”
He added that the beta test of the platform has been “successful beyond expectation”, which showed REI that there was appetite for lightly used products at lower prices. Used Gear products are on average 65% cheaper than the same products new.
