REI looks to within for new chief executive

Outdoor retail co-operative and product manufacturer REI has named Eric Artz as its new president and CEO. He takes over permanently, having served as interim CEO since February 2019.

He first joined REI in 2012 as chief financial officer. He has been chief operating officer of the company since 2014, overseeing departments including digital retail, finance, corporate strategy and IT during that time. He previously spent 17 years at VF Corporation. He is currently vice-chairman of the board of the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA).

“After a thorough national search, it was clear to us that the best person for the job was already leading the co-op,” said Steve Hooper, chair of the REI board. “To his core, Eric believes in the purpose and impact of the co-op. Anyone who knows him well will tell you that above all, he cares deeply about the power of the outdoors to bring people together.”
