Patagonia defends public lands in first ever TV advert

Outdoor brand Patagonia has announced it will run the first ever television advertisement in its 45-year history to urge support for the protection of public lands in the US.

The company has invested nearly $700,00 in television and radio time in Montana, the home state of US Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. In June, he released a report recommending that the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah should be reduced in size to the “smallest area compatible” with its conservation.

Patagonia has also purchased television and radio coverage in Utah, home to Bears Ears and Staircase Escalante, two national monuments that are at risk of having their status rescinded.

In a statement, Patagonia president and CEO, Rose Marcario, said, “The national monuments under review are a critical part of our national heritage and these lands belong not just to us, but to future generations.  We stand with the millions of Americans who spoke out in support of keeping protections in place for public lands.  We hope Secretary Zinke will remember his roots and his words and protect these ‘national treasures.’"

The advertisement features the Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard, explaining why the conservation of public lands is so important and urging all lovers of the outdoors to join the fight to protect them. It can be viewed here.
