Report recommends drastically cutting size of Bears Ears National Monument

14/06/2017
The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah should be reduced in size to the “smallest area compatible” with its conservation, according to the US Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke.

Mr Zinke made the comment in his recommendations to US President Donald Trump after conducting a review of the monument.

The report drew immediate condemnation from The Conservation Alliance, an association that helps to protect wildlife areas in North America.

In an open letter, executive director John Sterling described it as “an illegal attempt to remove protections for the national monument in Utah”.

“The Conservation Alliance will seek opportunities to support legal challenges to any executive order that attempts to change the Bears Ears boundaries,” he added.

The status of the Bears Ears National Monument has provoked fierce debate within the outdoor industry. The organisers of the biannual Outdoor Retailer exhibition, which is usually held in Salt Lake City, Utah, have chosen to hold future editions outside of the state following pressure from several outdoor groups. The likes of Patagonia, Polartec and Arc’teryx said they would not return to the event while it was held in Utah in protest of state governor Gary Herbert’s support for rescinding the National Monument status of Bears Ears.
