Chaco shows support for Bears Ears

The outdoor industry has rallied in recent months around Bears Ears, which is at risk of being stripped of its national monument status by the administration of US President Donald Trump. At the moment, it is open to everyone for recreational use, but the proposed change in status could see the public lose their right to hike, camp and cycle in the area.
Several leading outdoor companies, including Patagonia, Arc’teryx and Polartec, announced earlier this year that they would not return to Outdoor Retailer while it continues to be held in Utah in protest at the change, which was proposed by state governor Gary Herbert. This prompted the organisers to announce they were seeking a new venue for future events.
Chaco’s gesture is the latest show of support for Bears Ears. The Chaco Bears Ears collection features limited-edition sandals featuring a webbing design inspired by Bears Ears. It also contains T-shirts and wrist wraps. The proceeds will be donated to Dine Bikeyah, an organisation that supports indigenous communities by safeguarding their ancestral lands, and Friends of Cedar Mesa, a group that aims to preserve public lands for future generations.
