Fire disrupts Kelheim’s fibre production

Viscose fibre specialist Kelheim has said a fire at its main fibre spinning area earlier this month has caused disruption to its production lines.

The fire broke out on October 14 but was extinguished within a few hours. Kelheim said nobody was seriously injured, although an employee suffered minor injuries. It added that there had been no hazardous discharges to the environment.

According to Kelheim, the fire caused “significant damage” to some parts of its fibre spinning lines and to electrical cabling. There was also some structural damage.

As a result, the company has developed a provisional plan for the restart of the production lines. It is planned to start the first two lines at the end of October, with a further two to follow at the end of November. It will take another eight months after that before the final four production lines all come online.

“Kelheim Fibres is in direct contact with customers and has informed them of the expected impact on
Supply,” the company said.
