Adidas seeks to ‘redefine running’ with new shoe
Sportswear manufacturer Adidas has continued its work with Silicon Valley-based technology company Carbon with the release of a shoe featuring a midsole that the companies claim is “printed with light and oxygen”.

This partnership was first unveiled in 2017. At that time, the partners launched a prototype sneaker that was part of adidas’ Futurecraft design project.

They have now gone a step further with the creation of the Alphaedge 4D running shoe. Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis technology is used to make the midsole. It involves the use of programmable liquid resins to create a midsole that offers responsive cushioning and high energy return to the wearer.

The speed of the creation process allows for prototypes to be created extremely quickly. This opens up the possibility of creating a midsole designed specifically for an athlete or consumer, based on the levels of movement, cushioning and stability they require.

In addition to the ‘4D’ midsole, the Alphaedge 4D shoe has a Primeknit upper made using adidas’ Forgefiber process. It sees TPU coated yarns individually constructed, which is said to offer increased strength in motion.

The outsole is designed in collaboration with tyre specialist Continental. It features engineered traction zones to support faster acceleration and smoother changes of direction, regardless of the surface or the weather.
