Outdoor organisations defend their work on microplastics

The European Outdoor Group (EOG) and the UK’s Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) have issued a joint statement to say they will “continue to focus significant resources” on the problem of clothing made from synthetic materials shedding microfibres.

In the statement, which the organisations published in the wake of a critical article in The Sunday Times on February 10, they said the outdoor industry is “rightly proud of its proactive approach to sustainability and conservation”. They added that all business and society in general share the need to address “huge and complex challenges” and said outdoor brands are working hard to find “viable solutions for the benefit of all”.

They said they had tried to engage with the journalist who wrote the article in The Sunday Times, even though a request for information reached them late on Friday, February 8, asking for a response by the following morning. The OIA responded immediately, the joint statement said, and highlighted that the outdoor industry has taken the issue of microplastics seriously and is already carrying out extensive work on the subject.

In spite of this, they said the newspaper had published “a misleading and poorly researched article”.
