Converse blends classic designs with recycled materials
Nike-owned footwear brand Converse has unveiled new versions of two of its iconic products, the Chuck Taylor All Star and the Chuck 70, which are made using upcycled or recycled materials.

This is part of a new project, Converse Renew, which aims to address the challenges of dealing with post-consumer or post-industrial waste. The brand wants to find more sustainable ways to make its products.

The first iteration, Renew Canvas, is made from 100% recycled polyester that is derived from used plastic bottles. Converse has said it has the same feel and look as traditional Converse canvas.

Renew Denim is made using an in-house upcycling process for denim jeans that have been diverted from landfill. As well as the Chuck Taylor All Star, it will also feature in a new version of the Chuck 70.

The final part of this project is Renew Cotton, which Converse says uses a proprietary process that transforms cotton canvas waste from the manufacturing process before it is blended with polyester to create a new yarn.

Chuck Taylor All Stars and Chuck 70s feature Converse Renew Canvas will be released in July. This will be followed in August by a Renew Denim Chuck 70. Renew Cotton releases will come in early 2020.
