It quotes a recipient of funding as saying: "When my wife was hospitalised I had to take time off work to care for her. After several weeks, it became impossible for us to afford our bills and we were on the verge of eviction.
“Without the urgent help and respect I got from the Two Ten Footwear Foundation, I don't know how we would have made it."
Two Ten was founded in 1939 in the leather district in Boston, the birthplace of the shoe industry in the United States. During the Great Depression, a group gathered to contribute some of their earnings for whoever's family was most in need that week. The group grew rapidly and in 1945 became a national organisation.
In June, it estimated more than 100,000 people in the country are in need of assistance and claimed to receive “hundreds of harrowing calls for help” every day.
