ITMA to hand out Sustainable Innovation Award for second time

30/05/2019
The organisers of the ITMA textile machinery exhibition have unveiled the finalists for the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Award, which will be handed out for the second time at the forthcoming edition of the exhibition in Barcelona (June 20-26).

The award is broken down into two categories: the ITMA Industry Excellence Award, which celebrates the collaboration of ITMA exhibitors and their customers; and the ITMA Research & Innovation (R&I) Excellence Award, which is reserved for Master’s students of exhibiting institutions.

The three finalists for the Industry Excellence Award are:

Denim producer Candiani, for a fabric made using regenerated and recycled raw materials, including Lenzing’s Tencel lyocell fibres;
Levi Strauss & Co, inaugural winner of this award in 2015. This time, it has been nominated for its in-store customisation studio that allows customers to create a unique pair of jeans in less than two hours;
Apparel group VF Corporation, which has brought together four technologies in one system to bring about drastic reductions in water consumption during the finishing stages of jeans manufacturing.

The students in the running for the R&I Excellence Award are:

Mathias Zidda, Institut Für Textiltechnik, RWTH Aachen University. His work has focused on the development of a gear driven 3D rotational braiding machine;
Pamela Massaccesi, Universidad De Buenos Aires, who has worked on reusable food wrapping;
Sarika Sunil Borikar, D.K.T.E. Society’s Textile & Engineering Institute, who is exploring the creation of a greener sanitary napkin.

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony on June 20, the opening day of the exhibition.

Of the finalists, Fritz Mayer, president of organiser CEMATEX (the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers), said: “As the world continues to face sustainability challenges, it is heartening to see the successful collaboration between technology providers and industry users, which benefits consumers and has a positive impact on the environment and business bottom line. We would like to congratulate all the finalists for their outstanding efforts.”
