Lenzing: Climate change is most important issue

25/06/2019
Fibre producer Lenzing Group has earmarked €100 million over the 'coming years' to reduce carbon emissions in its business and in its supply chain.

The Austrian producer of Tencel plans to reduce CO2 emissions per ton of product by almost 50% by 2030, compared with a 2017 baseline, and be ‘carbon neutral’ by 2050.

The goals are in line with those laid out by the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, a commitment under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Lenzing has signed the commitment alongside sportswear brands such as adidas, Peak Performance, Salomon and Mammut.

Lenzing CEO Stefan Doboczky said: “Climate change is the most important issue mankind is facing. With this commitment we are fully in line with the Paris climate agreement and will further help the world to reduce the speed of global warming.

“Our ambitious decarbonisation targets make us a front runner, not only in the world of fibre producers but also among major industrial companies. Despite the substantial investment that is necessary, we are convinced that this is not only a very responsible step but that it will also be a value-generating move.

“It is our responsibility towards our children and grandchildren to act now.”
