China: CNTAC forges paths to climate neutrality

Local media have reported that China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) recently held a conference on the topic of achieving carbon neutrality across the Chinese textile industry alongside local fashion group Peacebird.

Both industry and government figures attended the event, which discussed progressing to a new stage of “green” development by moving on from the notion of “sustainable” fashion to a future of carbon neutrality across the sector and beyond.

Peacebird, the first brand to participate in what Chinese media described as a national carbon neutral acceleration plan for China-based brands, donated ¥2 million (around $313,000) to a special climate innovation fund, in order to help support more local enterprises with accelerating environmental action and, ultimately, achieving carbon neutrality.

Notably, CNTAC announced that its life-cycle assessment (LCA) working group, formed in December 2020 and known as CNTAC-LCA, will jointly establish national LCA evaluation systems and tools for textiles, as well as research and develop a “whole life-cycle” material environmental impact database, plus introduce “scientific”, standardised measurements for assessing materials’ energy and carbon footprint.

CNTAC also suggested that “optimisation pathways” would be introduced to help supply chain stakeholders with “green” environmental management practices.
