US non-profit hosts 'cotton day' in China
Following on from its Cotton Day Korea event last month, Cotton Council International (CCI) has hosted a similar event for the Chinese market.
Non-profit CCI is the export-focused arm of the National Cotton Council of America (NCC) and consequently operates the Cotton USA trademark internationally.
Executive director at CCI, Bruce Atherley, discussed recent trends in the US cotton industry, including attempts to mitigate raw cotton contamination.
Mr Atherley described how the industry began a pilot programme designed to assess the feasibility of using cotton, as opposed to plastic, packaging for bales earlier this year, with a view to further reducing the presence of contaminants in cotton bales. He also touched upon how the United States Department of Agriculture had recently developed “new standards” for mulch, in a bid to preserve cotton integrity when in storage, as well as during transportation over to the gin through unpacking.
CCI’s sustainably minded US Cotton Trust Protocol initiative and technical consultancy Cotton USA Solutions, both of which launched in 2020, were also singled out as core components of its portfolio offering.
Reports from within China suggested that the annual affair drew in around 350 online viewers this year.
