Patagonia China makes 1% ‘Earth tax’ pledge
Patagonia’s Chinese business has committed to joining the "Earth tax" initiative, beginning next month.
In a post to local social media platform Weibo, the outdoor brand said it will be donating 1% from every sale made via Alibaba’s Tmall portal, in addition to all products sold through its sub-application within the WeChat ecosystem and all purchases made in company-owned retail stores from December.
Funds raised will be shared among domestic non-profits working on behalf of environmental protection, Patagonia China said, helping to “make every purchase more meaningful”.
Founded in 1973, California-based Patagonia has pledged 1% of its sales to environmental causes since 1985. Company founder Yvon Chouinard co-founded the 1% for the Planet organisation in 2002 to encourage other businesses to do the same.
Mr Chouinard made public his decision to transfer ownership of Patagonia to two new entities, the Patagonia Purpose Trust and the Holdfast Collective, to make Earth the firm’s “only shareholder” back in September.
