China: outdoor sports could reach ¥3 trillion by 2025

According to an outdoor sports industry development plan for 2022-2025 issued by China’s General Administration of Sport and seven other departments, the country’s government seeks to spur total revenues of at least $425 billion (¥3 trillion) within the sector by 2025.

State-backed news publication China Daily has suggested that the entire domestic sports industry, including outdoor pursuits, is now expected to be worth over $705 billion (¥5 trillion) by the same year. Meanwhile, fellow government-owned outlet People’s Daily relayed that the number of Chinese citizens participating in outdoor sporting activities alone had surpassed 400 million by the end of 2021.

Back in January, one month prior to the start of the 2022 Winter Olympics, the country’s National Bureau of Statistics said that almost 346 million people had engaged in winter sports at least once during the period since Beijing was officially announced as this year’s host.

In the race to achieve its 2025 target for outdoor sports, the country reportedly aims to create 100 new outdoor sports events, improve its logistics capabilities to make shipping outdoor equipment easier and establish dedicated, activity-friendly zones inside its national parks and nature reserves.
