Athletic footwear manufacturing giant Pou Chen has confirmed plans to reduce the number of employees at its Pou Yuen Vietnam factory in Ho Chi Minh City by roughly 3,000 workers in a Taiwan Stock Exchange filing.

The facility previously employed around 50,500 people.

Local media reported that the company will also not be renewing the contracts of a further 3,000 workers, some of whom have served on its production lines for as many as three years.

Pou Chen said in the filing that it had taken steps to respond “prudently” to what it called “dynamic changes” in the local business environment.

The group supplies sports shoe brands including Nike, adidas, Salomon, New Balance and Asics.
