Pou Yuen Vietnam lets go of another 6,000 workers

Further to the news, made public earlier this year, that Taiwanese athletic footwear manufacturing group Pou Chen would be reducing its Pou Yuen Vietnam factory workforce by approximately 6,000 people, local media have now reported that the facility will next lay off nearly 6,000 permanent employees, beginning the end of June.

Prior to February’s job cuts, which involved around 3,000 permanent members of staff and 3,000 temporary contractors, the number of individuals employed at Pou Yuen Vietnam was in the region of 50,000.

According to online outlet VnExpress, which has ties to the Vietnamese state, a decline in orders due to diminished global spending power, particularly in Europe and the US, had triggered what the publication called “the biggest lay-off since Pou Yuen started its operation in Ho Chi Minh City in 1996”.

The plant is known to supply major sports shoe brands, including Nike and adidas.
