‘Turning point’ for Vaude in latest sustainability report
German outdoor brand Vaude reduced Co2 emissions by 5% in 2022 from 2021 despite increasing revenue by 13%, which CEO Antje von Dewitz describes as a “turning point”: “Decoupling our resource consumption from our economic success is now measurably evident.”

She said: “The successful CO2 reduction is primarily attributed to higher energy efficiency and the use of lower-emission energy sources in material manufacturing within our global supply chain.

“Another contributing factor was Vaude’s participation in the Supply Chain Decarbonisation Project along with nine other outdoor brands that worked systematically together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain.”

As reported in its new sustainability report, from 2022, all products are now “balance-sheet climate neutral”. The emissions from mobility, materials, manufacturin, and shipping are analysed and reduced. Emissions that are unavoidable are offset through non-profit Myclimate.

Vaude says it is particularly proud of the development of its Green Shape Standard. The programme's criteria have been revised and an external Green Shape Advisory Board has been established. The credibility has also been reflected in the new Greenpeace report:  In a review of 14 sustainability labels, the Green Shape Standard received the best rating.

Vaude has also made strides on its path toward a circular economy. The Rethink Collection, made from recyclable PET materials, will be launched in 2024. The company is working on solutions for an infrastructure for the collection, sorting and recycling of textiles. "I see the circular economy as one of the most crucial solutions for preserving our planet. With circular solutions, we can change the world. It's time to change our thinking,” said Ms von Dewitz.

It has launched Vaude Rent, an outdoor gear rental service, and an upcycling platform. To prolong product usage, Vaude offers repair services, online repair guides and a new re-commerce platform with be introduced soon.

Vaude has been publishing a sustainability report since 2013. "We voluntarily undertake this effort, as well as the costs of implementing measures for environmental protection, social standards, etc – however, this also puts us as a disadvantage compared to companies that don't take their responsibilities seriously. With the new EU legislation, all companies will finally be held accountable – this is a great opportunity to advance global issues such as climate protection and human rights in the supply chain, together," added Ms von Dewitz.
