Lycra presents GRS-certified FiT400 for performance knits
Delaware-based stretch fibre manufacturer The Lycra Company has expanded its line of EcoMade products with the addition of Lycra FiT400 for knits.
According to its developer, FiT400 is a “unique bicomponent fibre” made from 60% recycled PET polyester and 14.4% bio-derived material.
Two different polyester polymers together create a helical crimp for “permanent stretch and recovery”, plus give breathability, a soft hand-feel, low shrinkage, cooling comfort and chlorine resistance, among other properties, to knitted fabrics. The fibre also meets Global Recycled Standard (GRS) approval.
“We developed Lycra FiT400 fibre to deliver in-demand performance benefits and an enhanced soft hand to the knit fabric category,” explained chief brand and innovation officer, Steve Stewart. “This innovation also meets expectations for more sustainable solutions, since it is made with recycled and bio-derived materials."
Controlled tests “under specific conditions" suggest that FiT400 can be recycled into new polyester fibres. Provided they meet brand quality specifications, articles containing Lycra FiT400 are eligible to carry the company’s Xtra Life and Coolmax EcoMade hangtags.
The initial target market is activewear, swimwear and athletic leisurewear producers, the company said.
