Celebrations to mark His Majesty King Charles III’s seventy-fifth birthday in November included the annual Sustainability in Fashion conference, co-hosted by The King’s Foundation (formerly The Prince’s Foundation) and Fashion Council Germany at Dumfries House in Scotland.

The event was sponsored by Lenzing-owned fibre brand Tencel, online auctioneer eBay and PVH Foundation, the charitable arm of Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein owner PVH. It falls under the umbrella of the Future Textiles programme, a craft-led training initiative in traditional skills like weaving and hand embroidery ran by The King’s Foundation.

Speakers included Tencel collaborator and designer Patrick McDowell, journalists Emily Chan and Christiane Arp, designer Alice Robinson, academic Centre for Sustainable Fashion director Dilys Wilson, plus academic and Fashion Roundtable chief executive Tamara Cincik. The inspiration for this year's theme was "disruption".

Eighty secondary school pupils, many of whom hailed from across Scotland, and twenty-four German graduates of a Fashion Council Germany sustainable fashion course participated in the morning session.

As part of Generation Zukunft, the council reached 2,000 pupils in 2022 alone with the help of PVH Foundation, said chief executive Scott Lipinski. It similarly supported six three-week intensive skills residencies for German designers at the foundation's Highgrove Gardens base with help from Swarovski Foundation.

“For many years, The King’s Foundation has helped people of all ages learn textile skills that will help them gain employment or start their own responsible fashion business," commented Future Textiles manager, Ashleigh Douglas. "It was an honour to have so many influential people visit us here at Dumfries House to share their experiences with school pupils, students and people in the early stages of their careers.”
