Swiss companies HeiQ, Mammut and Nespresso have joined hands to produce the Extraordinary jacket, which they say has the “ability to retain 20% more heat than a conventional insulation jacket of similar thickness”.

The outdoor garment combines outdoor brand Mammut’s lightweight Ajungilak insulation with XReflex, a three-dimensional, aluminised scrim layer manufactured by materials innovation specialist HeiQ. XReflex is partly made from aluminium retrieved from recycled Nespresso coffee capsules and delivers “outstanding heat performance”, according to its developer.

The jacket was a key focus of a HeiQ-hosted webinar to discuss XReflex’s practical applications on November 22, during which sports brand Salomon’s Elixir jacket, another adopter, also featured. Panellists included Mammut’s chief marketing officer, Kate Maiava, plus global director of apparel products at Salomon, Hugo Debrueres.
