Students honour transport workers through Jordan design
The latest release from the Nike-owned Jordan brand is a student-designed ode to transport workers in New York.

Jordan Brand Wings started in 2015 to break down the barriers that hold young people back from educational opportunities. One of four key global investments from Wings is the Design Programme.

During the course of six weeks, more than 130 high school students from partner organizations worked with members of the Jordan Brand product-creation team to design an Air Jordan I centred on the theme of ‘role models’

The students were encouraged to weave personal narratives into their designs, creatively honouring the local figures who support their dreams.

Students from each city pitched their final designs to a panel of Jordan employees, who New York City’s Air Jordan 1 Mid Subway, inspired by the staff of the MTA, the largest public transit system in North America, to go into production.

The reflective Swoosh symbolises the reflective stripes on MTA trains; the secondary laces are also reflective. The grey and black upper is a nod to the colours of the train, built with water-resistant leathers for durability during New York City weather. The speckled liner and midsole reference the speckled floors in the stations and on the trains.
