Green chemistry start-up breaks down blends

Founded in 2019 by Steffen Gerlach and Reiner Mantsch and based in Münster, Germany, Eeden has developed a chemical recycling process for polyester/cotton blend fabrics, which it says reverts polyester back into its monomers and cotton into cellulose powder.

Taking a fully green chemistry approach to this challenging category of feedstock, the start-up says its technology combines mechanical and chemical processes and produces products can then be processed into new, high-quality textile fibres. “The magic is in the German engineering, we have made it as inexpensive as possible and we can reuse large quantities of the chemicals in the process,” Steffen Gerlach, business lead, tells sportstextiles. He further adds that the Eeden process doesn’t use salts, thus avoiding having to dispose of it afterwards. “Many in the industry underestimate this issue,” he says, pointing out that it is difficult to “find a location for a factory that produces 1kg of salts for 1 kg of material.”

The company conducted seed fundraising rounds in 2022 and is now seeking further funding to set up a pilot plant in 2025.
