The highly automated plant should be fully operational by the end of this year. It will sort used apparel collected in Eastern Norway for reuse, repair and recycling. The group also plans to sell the technology for sorting facilities locally and globally.
Pål Erik Haraldsen, general manager of both NTG and NTS, said that the new sorting system is flexible and can be set up to sort into categories as needed. “We can sort by fibre content, colour, brand logos and accessories such as buttons, zips, prints and the like,” he said.
The company is set on providing a solution ahead of new legislation in Europe, which, like Norway, will make it mandatory to set up separate collection systems for domestic textiles by January 1, 2025.
