Financial backing for hemp fibre refining process

North Carolina-based Renaissance Fiber has announced having received $75,000 to fund the first phase of a new facility in Mocksville, North Carolina. This new plant will be equipped with the company’s proprietary hemp fibre cottonising process.

It said that conventional methods require chemistry that is dangerous for workers and water supplies, while the technology developed by Renaissance Fiber uses a clean degumming process that also controls fibre length, fineness and surface quality. It believes this can ‘unlock hemp’s potential as a true plug-and-play fibre for textiles’.

Equilibrium Impact Ventures has provided the funds as part of its mission to address gaps in the scaling up of new industrial processes in the United States. “My partners, Dr. Shante Williams and Adrian Smith, and I recognise that growing businesses face many challenges; however, some challenges can be easily removed by deploying capital quickly, strategically and in a patient enough way that businesses are allowed to achieve the positive outcomes that help make both of our bottom lines sustainable. Renaissance Fiber is a US manufacturer of the future,” commented Kasem Rodriguez Mohsen, general partner.

Daniel Yohannes, CEO and co-founder of Renaissance Fiber, added “by building this advanced refining capacity here in North Carolina, we are creating vital new opportunities for American farmers and manufacturers to lead the global shift towards eco-friendly textiles.”
