Haglöfs reaches PFAS-free milestone
Swedish outdoor brand Haglöfs has produced all its waterproof clothing without PFAS in the autumn-winter 2025 collection, the culmination of a 10 year journey to phase it out.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of chemicals used for their water and stain-repellent properties, nicknamed 'forever chemicals' due to their extreme persistence in the environment and the human body.
Many companies in the outdoor sector have been looking for alternatives that have the same performance attributes since Greenpeace flagged up their potentially harmful effects in its 2012 report, ’Chemistry for Any Weather’.
Victor Adler, business development and sustainability director at Haglöfs, said: “A journey of phasing out PFAS that began more than ten years ago is now finally complete. It’s been a process of learning and adaptation, with some setbacks along the way, but now even our highest performing shell products have finally fully transitioned into PFAS-free alternatives.”
Haglöfs’ shell jacket range is adapted to the demands of different outdoor activities, using a variety of fabrics and techniques to achieve a balance of fit, flexibility and durability for skiing, hiking, climbing and mountaineering. As well as the 3-layer Proof Pro shell, the collection also includes 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro ePE.
The company has also updated its insulated jacket designs, made with natural down (H Down) or synthetic recycled polyester (Mimic). Mimic Gold features PrimaLoft Pure insulation while Mimic Platinum also contains graphene.
