SAO Textile picks up CleanTech award
Sao Textile, a start-up that collects waste fishing nets to make recycled nylon fibres took home the Cleantech Open France award in the ‘better manufacturing’ category. The competition, now in its 16th year, is supported by French energy utilities company Engie and business incubator BpiFrance.

Founded in 2023 by Marine Olacia, SAO Textile collects used fishing nets in Sète, a major fishing port on the Mediterranean. They are recycled using a purely mechanical method, and no virgin material is added, the company says.

The Cleantech Open France competition covers five sectors: nutrition, housing, mobility, manufacturing and energy production. This year, more than 200 companies applied, 40 finalists were selected and seven awards handed out. Over the years, it has spawned an ecosystem of 720 companies and 100 public and private partners to support innovation in clean technologies.
