BASF opens recycled nylon plant
German chemicals company BASF has officially launched production of loopamid, a recycled nylon 6, in a new facility located in Shanghai and with a yearly capacity of 500 tonnes. The recycled polymer is made from industrial textile waste, these include cutting scraps, defective cuts, offcuts and other production textile waste. The group plans to gradually increase the share of post-consumer waste in its feedstock.

“The technology behind loopamid allows textile-to-textile recycling for polyamide 6 in a wide variety of fabric blends, including those with elastane. loopamid not only makes a significant contribution to the textile circular economy, but also helps our customers achieve their sustainability goals,” commented Ramkumar Dhruva, president of BASF’s Monomers division.

Both the factory and the products are Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified, the company said.
