Heraeus and Rudolf team up to introduce AGXX to textiles

German chemicals company Rudolf has formed a strategic partnership with fellow German company Heraeus Precious Metals to bring an innovative antimicrobial technology, AGXX, to textiles. “It is very rare that a new biocide product comes to the textile market. AGXX is not only a very promising technology, it is also very sustainable,” said Rudolf CTO Dr Gunther Dusheck.

Heraeus introduced the biocide solution last year at Performance Days. Its active ingredient is activated oxygen, produced in the presence of humidity by a catalytic reaction between two precious metals. “There is no leaching of metals, the metals are in fact the mediators,” said Dr Tobias Schwob, head of innovation for antimicrobial technologies at Heraeus. This allows AGXX to regenerate continuously to offer long-lasting efficiency. The finish has been found to withstand 100 laundry cycles.

Rudolf will be marketing the antibacterial and antifungal solution under the name Ruco-Bac Rox. “It is already available for production trials and will officially be launched next year,” said Stephen Müller, Rudolf’s business development manager for biocides.

Rudolf has found that AGXX is also effective on fungi, which gives it a wide spectrum of possible applications, from apparel to technical fabrics. The finish can be applied on all grounds. For companies looking to incorporate the additive in the yarn (as opposed to applications on textiles), this is a solution offered by Heraeus. Rudolf is marketing the fabric finishes.
