Non-biocidal plant-based anti-odour solution launches for textiles

Biocompatibility Innovation (BCI), based in Este, Italy, is introducing B-Kool, a plant-based antibacterial solution for textiles that was first developed for medical devices, its field of expertise. The technology prevents the contamination of bacteria through a mechanical system that stops bacteria from colonising a surface, as opposed to conventional biocidal finishes.

“Our patented technology platform was designed to limit the post-implant biological processes
that contribute to device degeneration, supporting durable device function over time. B-Kool applies the same scientific principles without relying on conventional antimicrobial approaches,” said Alessandro Gandaglia, CEO of Biocompatibility Innovation.

B-Kool can be applied as a surface treatment or integrated directly into fibres or polymers during manufacturing and is said to be compatible with both natural and synthetic fibres. BCI sees potential market applications in textiles and consumer products as well as polymers and coatings.

B-Kool is certified Oeko-Tex Eco Passport and has been found to remain effective through 70 laundering cycles in tests. The technology has also achieved 99.99999% efficacy on next-generation spacesuit textiles being developed by REA Space for the Italian Space Agency.
