Hyosung and Lenzing team up on plant-based yoga collection
Korean elastane producer Hyosung and Austrian man-made cellulosic fibre specialist Lenzing will be presenting new developments targeting yogawear at Performance Days next week. A demonstration collection will be on show with garments made from various blends, including Lenzing’s Tencel and Ecovero made with Refibra technology and Hyosung’s stretch yarns made from renewable resources (regen BIO Elastane), recycled elastane or dope-dyed (Creora Color+).

“We’ve had many brand partners approach us looking for a sustainably-made elastane that would help them tell a fully biobased material story,” commented Simon Whitmarsh-Knight, Hyosung’s global sustainability director for textiles. He added that Hyosung’s regen BIO Elastane was a good match for Lenzing’s wood-based fibres.

Switch to alternative bio-feedstock

Hyosung has announced it is transitioning the biobased feedstock used to make its regen BIO Elastane from corn to sugarcane, which it said leads to lower carbon emissions without sacrificing performance. The future production plant in Vietnam will be using sugar cane to produce Bio-BDO, a building block for elastane, using a technology licenced from US biotech company Genomatica (Geno).

At Performance Days, which opens in Munich next week (October 29 & 30), Simon Whitmarsh-Knight will be participating in a seminar with Robin Cooper, VIVE Senior Manager of Regenerative Agriculture. Hyosung recently joined the VIVE Sustainable Supply Program to ensure traceability and transparency from sugarcane farms to fibre production. The seminar, Hyosung TNC’s regen BIO Elastane: Advancing Circularity and Traceability with the VIVE Platform, takes place on October 29 at 4 pm.
