Consolidation in sustainability monitoring platforms

Paris-based Carbonfact has announced the acquisition of Vaayu, based in Berlin. Both companies have created digital platforms designed to help brands monitor and reduce their impacts. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

By pooling their services and resources, the combined company said it can offer 150,000 different emission factors that cover materials, processes and finishes. These includes some 200 textile-specific processes and 650 material categories across 144 countries. The goal is to achieve a granularity that makes it possible to calculate impacts by product, the company said. Furthermore, the platform is said to include some 50+ patented materials and processes and 7,500 ‘bespoke’ emission factors created for its customers.

The suppliers’ network that feeds the Carbonfact platform has expanded to 7,000 factories, and the combined customer base is in the order of 300 apparel and footwear brands and retailers.

Founded in 2020 by Namrata Sandhu, Vaayu has been working with 100+ brands, spanning the likes of New Balance, Axel Arigato, Ace & Tate or Asket. Carbonfact, which was founded one year later, said it has some 200+ apparel and footwear brands, which include On, The North Face, Burton, Ganni and Marc O'Polo.

The stronger outfit will better address growing product-level data needs, as the EU prepares to implement the Digital Product Passport (DPP), the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). California’s SB 253 also requires data, as does France’s (voluntary) Eco-Score.
